An exhaust air heat pump unit is an energy efficient way to heat your home and will meet the heating and hot water requirements of any property insulated to modern standards. The heat pump uses electricity as its fuel source and produces hot water. The ratio at which it does this is known as its Coefficient of Performance or CoP. If a unit has a CoP of 3 then it means that for every 1 kilowatt of electrical energy that the unit uses it will give 3 kilowatts of heat energy in the hot water. Exhaust air heat pumps can have a CoP as high as 3.4.

The output water is normally at a temperature of between 35˚C and 45˚C. This is lower than produced by a conventional boiler but is perfect for operating underfloor heating systems, which have lower operating temperatures. An exhaust air heat pump can produce higher temperatures but keeping it lower makes it much more efficient. The combination of the exhaust air heat pump and underfloor heating gives a system that provides a high degree of comfort but will also be economical to run. The system does not use the electricity to heat the water directly but works in conjunction with the house extract ventilation system. Warm air is taken from areas in the building that are usually warm, such as bathrooms and kitchens. This warm air us usually just thrown away. However, the exhaust air heat pump extracts the heat from this warm air and uses it to produce the output hot water. At times when there is insufficient heat extracted from the exhaust air the unit uses its built-in immersion heater to warm hot water for domestic use. In this way it can provide sufficient energy to meet normal heating and hot water demands.

When working at its most efficient, an exhaust air source heat pump can offer significant energy reductions over conventional heating systems and in the right conditions can achieve a 50% reduction in running costs.
