Electric Underfloor Heating Systems For Tiled Floors

Underfloor heating can be used to simply warm your floor or act as a primary heat source, replacing your radiators. It comes in 2 main forms, electric underfloor heating systems and water underfloor heating systems. Electrical systems use electrical cables to generate heat, whereas water systems use of a length of pipe set in the floor, a heat source and a pump to pump the water through the pipes to heat your floor.

There are 3 different types of suitable system for wooden floors

Before choosing a system you must ensure that the subfloor is suitable, these would normally be either solid screed and concrete floors or joisted wooden floors with 18mm WBP plywood covering.

Floorboards can be covered with ProWarm™ tile backer boards (fixed every 300mm).

150w 2mm Loose Heating Cables

Our ProWarm™ 2mm Loose Cables are good for installations into small bathrooms or small kitchen area's with awkward fixed objects to work around such as curved shower trays, toilets, kitchen units.

The cable comes as one long continues roll of heating wire on a drum and you have to space the cable out evenly over the floor, this offers the installer freedom to space the cable evenly no matter how awkward the room shape, the actual cable is rated at 10 watts per linear meter, the spacing of the cables determines the heat output ie.

  • 5cm spacing between cable loops = 200w/m2
  • 6cm spacing between cable loops = 165w/m2
  • 6.5cm spacing between cable loops = 150w/m2
  • 7.5cm spacing between cable loop = 130w/m2

The loose cable can be tiled onto directly with suitable flexible tile adhesive or can be covered with a suitable leveling compound (please refer to manufactures guidelines for correct type).

PLEASE NOTE: as with any underfloor heating installation it is essential that you have a good level of insulation beneath it to maximise heat output and reduce any downward heat loss. It’s always best to cover with levelling compound if possible.

It's best to slightly under order by 10% as the cable CAN NOT be cut at any point.

Heating Mats

Heating Mats

Our ProWarm™ 2mm mat system is our most used system, the system use's exactly the same cable as the loose system except the cable spacing has already been done for you in our factory, therefore all you need to do is roll the mat out all over the floor until it's used up, the cable can be removed from the mat to shape into any awkward spaces.

This system is ideal for kitchens, lounges, dining rooms and most other areas. This comes in 3 different power outputs, 100w-150w & 200w.

  • 100w mats are only used to take the chill off of tiles and are not suitable for primary heating.
  • 150w mats can be used for most applications and are suitable for use as a primary heating source (providing adequate insulation is in place).
  • 200w mats are normally used in areas of high heat loss such as conservatories, these provide a primary heat source (providing adequate insulation is in place).

The mats can be tiled onto directly with suitable flexible tile adhesive or can be covered with a suitable leveling compound (please refer to manufactures guidelines for correct type).

Inscreed Heating

Inscreed Heating

In screed cables are designed to be fixed to re-bar which has been laid into foil faced insulation (kingspan/celotex) and directly under a minimum 60mm screed, these cables are only normally used in a new extension or conservatory project.

  • The cable is spaced out according to the desired wattage, normally a minimum of 200w.
  • In screed cables work differently to the other 2 types as they take much longer to warm the large screed base in which they are installed, for this reason the cable is much thicker at 6mm and produces an output of 17 watts per linear meter.
  • These cables can be used directly under thick tiles and flagstones if they are bedded in with a base of 20mm sand + cement with an SBR additive, they are also used in new builds if you are installing amtico or wooden floors on top.
