On 26 February, colleagues from across The Underfloor Heating Store swapped their usual day-to-day tasks for mixing bowls and frying pans as part of a charity pancake event in support of our Charity of the Year, Basildon Mind.
Representatives from every team took part. Once the pancakes were cooked, two friendly contests got under way: one to find the best-looking pancake and another to put everyone's pancake-flipping skills to the test.
A team event with a difference
The event gave colleagues who do not always work side by side a chance to catch up, enjoy some friendly competition and take part in something completely different. Some focused on cooking, others worked on presentation, and plenty of people were ready to encourage the competitors.
It was a simple activity that everyone could get involved with, making it a genuine team effort from beginning to end.
The best-looking pancake competition
The first challenge put creativity on the menu. Entrants had to make a pancake that would stand out on appearance, turning a straightforward batch of batter into something designed to catch the judges' attention.
There was no single route to an eye-catching entry, which made choosing a favourite no easy task. The finished pancakes sparked plenty of good-natured debate as everyone considered which creation deserved the best-looking pancake title.
Putting our flipping skills to the test
Next came the pancake flipping contest. Participants needed a steady hand, good timing and enough confidence to commit to the movement. A clean flip always looks easy once it lands, but getting the pancake safely back into the pan is another matter.
The challenge brought out some friendly rivalry and gave every team a reason to get behind its contestants. Whether a flip was carefully controlled or slightly more ambitious, every attempt added to the atmosphere.
Supporting Basildon Mind in our local community
Behind the fun was a cause that matters to us. Basildon Mind is an independent local mental health charity affiliated with national Mind. It works across Basildon, Billericay and Wickford, helping people in the local community find mental health support when they need it.
Workplace charity events do not always need to involve a huge challenge. A shared activity can bring colleagues together, encourage conversation and help keep important local services visible. Our pancake event gave us an enjoyable way to do exactly that while continuing our support for Basildon Mind.

Thank you to everyone who mixed, cooked, decorated, flipped, judged or cheered from the sidelines. With members from every team taking part, the event was a great example of what can happen when the whole business gets behind a shared cause.
